Our Purpose

The purpose of the Parks and Gathering Places Community Group is to inventory existing parks and gathering places, whether publicly or privately owned, and to identify potential additional sites for acquisition and/or development.

What We're Doing
And Ways You Can Get Involved

We have a list of places in and around Freeland where people go to relax, recreate, and socialize.  Please feel free to add to the list and to suggest other places that would be desirable to acquire.  Of obvious concern are ways to finance acquisitions and to pay for improvement and maintenance of existing properties.  Possibilities include fundraising campaigns, “adoption” by community groups (like the Lions have done with Freeland Park), donations of property, and tax revenues generated by formation of a Local Improvement District (LID).  It will be important to collaborate with the Island County Parks Department, South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District, Friends of Freeland, and private property owners.

We use the Parks and Gathering Places online conference for discussion. Everyone in the community is invited to participate.

If you would like to be part of these activities or learn more about the Parks and Gathering Places Community Group, call Steve Shapiro at 730-4266 or e-mail him.
